Dave Willcocks Asbestos Victim Support Group (DWAVSG) A Cheshire widow has announced her plans to set up a support group to help those affected by mesothelioma on the day of her husbands’ inquest.
Gill Willcocks from Crewe will create the Dave Willcocks Asbestos Victim Support Group (DWAVSG) after her husband died from devastating cancer of the lining of the lung, mesothelioma in October last year.
Dave was 61 when he died from the disease, which is caused by exposure to asbestos.

He was exposed to the deadly dust while working for ICI at the Wallerscote works in Northwich, Cheshire from 1970 to 1973.While caring for Dave, Gill vowed to help other people affected by mesothelioma by providing more information and advice on the disease.
Her plans will be announced at the inquest into her husbands’ death, being held at Crewe Coroners Court, at The Municipal Buildings, in Crewe, Cheshire before the HM Coroner for Cheshire, Mr Rheinburgh, at 10am on Tuesday, September 9.
She said: “Whilst caring for Dave I decided that I would start a support group for asbestos victims in my area so that I can share my experience. My aim is help other people to get information that they might need to help them through this most distressing time.

New research shows baseline CT screen helps detect early stage lung cancer in people at high risk because of asbestos exposure

A new study by Italian researchers published in the November issue of the oncologist suggests that CT screening may help in early detection of lung cancer among people with a history of asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure increases the risk of developing lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs or abdomen. In a group of more than a 1,000 people exposed to asbestos, CT screening found non-calcified nodules in 44 percent of the participants. Chest X-ray detected such nodules in only 4 percent of the study participants. Researchers also found nine cases of early stage lung cancer through the use of CT screening. None of these cases were detected by chest X-ray. The tumors were surgically removed, which potentially cured these individuals before their tumors were even visible on chest X-ray. CT screening also gave 11 false positive results. The researchers concluded that baseline CT screening was beneficial for people with a history of asbestos exposure who are consequently at high risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. They also concluded that additional research should be done to determine whether CT screening may assist in early detection of mesothelioma as well.(MN)

Asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late 1800s. Its use greatly increased during World War II. Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos dust. Initially, the risks associated with asbestos exposure were not known. However, an increased risk of developing mesothelioma was later found among shipyard workers, people who work in asbestos mines and mills, producers of asbestos products, workers in the heating and construction industries, and other tradespeople. Today, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets limits for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace. People who work with asbestos wear personal protective equipment to lower their risk of exposure.
The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. However, some individuals with only brief exposures have developed mesothelioma. On the other hand, not all workers who are heavily exposed develop asbestos-related diseases.
There is some evidence that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos-related diseases. This risk may be the result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of asbestos workers. To reduce the chance of exposing family members to asbestos fibers, asbestos workers are usually required to shower and change their clothing before leaving the workplace.(NCI)
